Ahistorical insight into the establishment of a House of Mercy, accompanied by a detailed logbook of the inhabitants from 1908 onwards.
Henrietta Louisa Farrer
We owe the existence of a House of Mercy in Horbury to Henrietta Louisa Farrer who wished to do something practical for the reception and protection of women who had led unchaste lives, with a view to their reformation, either in some reputable calling by which to earn a livelihood, or otherwise. Using her wealthy connections, Henrietta raised sufficient funds to bring this about.
Henrietta was born on July 7 1824 and was the daughter of James William Farrer Esq., Barrister, and The Honourable Henrietta-Elizabeth Scott. Her grandfather was the 1st Earl of Eldon, Lord Chancellor of Great Britain. She was christened at Beckenham, Kent, and lived in London during her early life. In July 1859 Henrietta married Rev. Sydney Henry Lear, son of the Dean of Salisbury.
Permission was granted by Rev. John Sharp, the Incumbent of Horbury, (who was Henrietta’s cousin) for her project to become reality, and a rented cottage on Millfield Road was secured for the purpose. A woman named Mrs Terry was installed in order to receive the first ‘penitent’ who was brought by her father the following day – Maundy Thursday April 11 1858. She was joined by Sister Emily of the Community of St. Michael Bussage the next day and on April 30 1858 by Sister Emma from Oxford. Seven more girls were admitted one by one and the Home was full.

In 1863 a spacious building of mediaeval appearance was erected, at the cost of £13,000, on Dovecote Lane in Horbury, and was opened on September 14 1864.
The burial ground occupies the summit of a hill called Hall Cliff and it commands an extensive view of the surrounding country. In fact the hill seems to rise from the centre of a valley, and if it were not that view is obstructed by a part of Horbury, the prospect would be to every point of the compass. As it is, the ground commands the whole of the township of Ossett, and a view of Thornhill. Middletown, Netherton, Crigglestone, and Wakefield. The burial ground is surrounded by a substantial stone wall, and the entrance to it is through a beautiful gothic “lychgate” which is surmounted by a cross. The ground is yet bare of trees. Mr. Thickett, of Horbury, is the contractor. The House of Mercy is to be erected on the slope of the same hill Iooking towards Crigglestone, and the ground is at present laid out in allotment gardens.
The new building is to be of the Gothic Style of architecture from designs by Mr. Woodyer, the architect of the Houses of Mercy at Clewer and Ditchingham.

Interment of Sister Mary
Through the efforts of some philanthropic and benevolent persons, what has been called a House of Mercy, for the reclamation of fallen women, has existed at Horbury, in the West Riding of this county ; but it was too small to accommodate more than a limited number – some 14 or 15 – of such penitents, and exertions, which have been attended with success, have been made to open a new building. That opening took place on Thursday last, so far as the new House of Mercy is intended to be proceeded with at present.
